TI OMAP procesors are used for multimedia applications, like mobile devices - phones, handsets, PDA’s, mp3 and mp4 players, portable game systems, GPS devices etc.
OMAP processors based on ARM processor, and some of theme contain a dual-core architecture.
Whole OMAP family is broken in to three parts: “High Performance”, “Basic Multimedia”, and “Modem and Applications”.
OMAP High Performance series based on the fastest ARM architecture processors. Morover, chips like OMAP3430, OMAP3420 and OMAP3410 are powered by fast up to 1 GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor and PowerVR SGX 535 2D/3D Graphics Accelerator, so they are used for high performance 3D applications like the best mobile phones, handsets and portable devices. OMAP2xxx and OMAP1xxx are slower - 200 MHz to 330 MHz but they are a part of High Performance series.
Basic Multimedia series is dedicate for mas market devices like popular mp3 or mp4 players, or GPS devices with some multimedia functions. This chips, like OMAP3xx besed on ARM9 processor.
Modem and Applications series chips, OMAP8xx and OMAP7xx, are combined multimedia and GSM/GPRS functionality, they are powered by ARM9 processor, and they are used for mass market mutimedia mobiles.
