VoIP via satellite internet

Posted by admin

VoIP is revolutionary way of telecommunication. Voice over Internet protocol allows to cheap, internet based, communication. There are many companies, like Skype, Vonage, Yahoo and Net2Phone, which offer VIOP services.
Satellite Internet, technology that has become very popular, allow VoIP providers to offer services in remote regions.
Satellite Internet has some limitations like packet loss, limited bandwidth and jitters.
Packet loss causes degradation of voice quality. Protocol used for voice transmission is UDP/IP and when packet is corrupted it cannot be retransmitted. TCP/IP protocol allows to retransmis corrupted data packets.
Bandwidth capacity for VoIP services (G.729 (b) encoding, 40 b payload and header compression) via satellite channels require 10 Kbps of bandwidth.
Jitters are used to calculate the delays in packet arrivals caused by network delay. When this factor isn’t within acceptable limits the quality of voice transmision becomes poor.
Another factor is latency that refers to the time delay in locating the Geo-stationary. Delay coused by latency factor is equal 280 msec.
If VoIP Via Satellite providers are able to cope with this problems, it will not be long before remote areas can connect via satellite VIOP with the rest of the world.
